Hong Kong Newt
(Paramesotriton hongkongensis)
Introduction
Belongs to the Warty Newt genus (Paramesotriton sp), a.k.a. Hong Kong Warty Newt, it is the only species of tailed amphibian in Hong Kong.
Distribution
Hong Kong; Widely distributed in New Terroritories such as Tai Po, Sai Kung, Fanling, and also found in Lantau and Hong Kong Island
Habitat
Pristine mountain streams
Size
About 15cm including tail
Diet
Carnivorous - Adults eat insect larvae, earthworms, tadpoles, fish fry and shrimps. Larvae are also carnivorous and can be cannibalistic.
